Greek Folk Dance Festival (GFDF)

​

Bringing a Small Part of Greece to the UK

​

The Greek Folk Dance Festival (GFDF) was created with a simple vision: to bring the sights, sounds, energy, and traditions of Greece directly to the UK through authentic music, dance, and cultural experiences.

​

Founded by the team behind Figoura, the festival was never intended to be just another dance event. The aim was to create an authentic Greek dance experience by welcoming musicians, instructors, and performers directly from Greece, allowing dancers and enthusiasts in the UK to experience the true spirit of a Greek glendi without having to travel abroad.

​

From its very beginning, the festival attracted dancers, dance schools, cultural groups, and enthusiasts from across the UK who shared a common passion for Greek folk dance, live music, and Greek culture.

​

The Beginning of the Journey

​​

The first Greek Folk Dance Festival was held on 30th May 2016 and focused on the island of Crete.

​

The success of this inaugural event demonstrated that there was significant demand for high-quality Greek dance events centred around authentic regional traditions and live music from Greece.

​

Later that same year, on 15th and 16th October 2016, the festival returned with a completely different focus: Pontos. This event welcomed Pontic musicians from Northern Greece and provided participants with a unique opportunity to experience the rich dance and musical traditions of Pontic Hellenism.

​

The festival continued to grow and develop with each event:

 

Thrace - March 2017

On 18th and 19th March 2017, GFDF turned its attention to Thrace. The festival welcomed authentic Thracian music and the much-loved group Thrakomelo, who were exceptionally well received by participants and guests alike.

 

Crete Part II - June 2017

Following the popularity of the original Cretan event, GFDF returned to Crete for a second time on 24th and 25th June 2017, further exploring the dances, music, and traditions of the island.

 

Crete Part III - May 2018

The relationship with Crete continued to flourish, and on 7th May 2018 the festival welcomed back the Cretan musicians for a third celebration of the island's rich dance heritage.

 

Crete & Pontos - October 2018

The final GFDF event before the pandemic was held on 20th October 2018 and combined two much-loved traditions in a single event.

 

The festival welcomed back Pontic performers alongside a young and hugely talented Cretan musician, Vangelis Gosmanis, who has since continued to establish himself as one of the rising talents of Cretan music.

 

The event was a fitting celebration of everything GFDF had become: authentic, energetic, educational, and community-driven.

 

What Made GFDF Different?

From the very beginning, the Greek Folk Dance Festival was built on a commitment to authenticity.

​

Rather than relying solely on recorded music, local interpretations, or modernised formats, GFDF focused on bringing musicians and cultural representatives directly from Greece to the United Kingdom.

​

Each festival explored a specific region, allowing participants to develop a deeper appreciation of:

​

• Regional dance styles

• Traditional music

• Local customs and traditions

• Cultural heritage

• The relationship between music, dance, and community

​

For many dancers, it became one of the few opportunities in the UK to experience authentic regional Greek dance in a setting that closely reflected the atmosphere found in Greece itself.

 

A Festival for Everyone

Although many attendees were members of dance groups and schools, GFDF was never restricted to experienced dancers.

​

The festival welcomed:

​

• Greek dance students

• Dance teachers and instructors

• Cultural associations

• Folk dance enthusiasts

• Musicians

• Members of the wider public

• Anyone with an interest in Greek culture

​

Whether attending workshops, enjoying live music, or participating in the evening celebrations, there was something for everyone.

 

A Quiet Pause

​

Like many cultural events around the world, the Greek Folk Dance Festival was placed on hold following the Covid-19 pandemic.

​

Since then, countless conversations have taken place with dancers, musicians, instructors, and past attendees who continue to ask the same question:

​

"When is GFDF coming back?"

​

While others have since attempted to offer their own versions of similar events using local bands or recorded music, we still believe there is a place for the original GFDF vision; authentic regional music, authentic teaching, and a festival created specifically for dancers, dance schools, and folk dance enthusiasts.

​

The festival has remained quiet, but it has never been forgotten.

 

Looking to the Future

​

At present, there are no confirmed dates for a future Greek Folk Dance Festival.

​

Events of this nature require significant planning, coordination, and organisation, particularly when working with musicians, performers, and guests from Greece.

​

However, discussions continue, ideas are regularly revisited, and interest remains as strong as ever.

​

Our hope is that the Greek Folk Dance Festival will once again open its doors, welcoming both returning friends and a new generation of dancers who may have only heard stories about the earlier events.

​

With enough support and the right conditions, 2028 may be the year that GFDF returns.
