Figoura's Cretan performance - A huge hit!

The Figoura school of Greek dance debut performance and workshop at this year's Dance Around The World (DATW) festival was an instant hit, and deemed a great success by all who were in attendance. The performing group represented Greece, in particular the Island of Crete in a spectacular fashion, with many admiring their Cretan attire .

The organisers of the festival commented on Figoura's "very engaging and inclusive workshop" and how it was "hugely enjoyed by everyone who attended". They expressed how they were "all overwhelmed by the outstandingly high quality performance" and that they felt "the audience was delighted by Figoura’s sparkling, energised and very warm display", and were all eager to have Figoura back again next year. There were even members of the audience that went on to say "we could have sat and watched them all day", commenting "we didn't want it to end".

The Figoura Cretan dance workshop, which lasted an hour was packed full of smiling and eager attendees. Figoura's Director, Jack Iacovou commented on how overwhelming it was to have, not only people with a general interest in folk dancing attending the workshop, but also many who had heard all about the classes and were keen to know more about Figoura in general. Greek visitors joined from as far as Birmingham to be part of the day.

The workshop was a perfect opportunity for people to ask questions about dances, the dance school, and speak with the instructors whilst learning some of the most popular (and forgotten) Cretan dances.

The video montage below gives a brief summary of the day in less than 2 minutes. We hope you enjoy it.

Figoura was delighted to be part of the event, and are already planning their return in 2018.

Figoura would also like to extend their thanks to the band 'Cretan Brioche' who collaborated with the performance division to provide live and authentic Cretan melodies throughout.

If you, like many others, are interested in learning and improving your Greek dancing at Figoura, now is a great time to register for the new term starting in January 2018 as online enrolment has just opened up for all the classes, which include the junior and adult divisions.

To make classes even more accessible to everyone, earlier this month Figoura launched a new weekend dance class (on Sundays at 13:00) aimed at beginners/intermediate level students. Spaces are limited and it is advised to book your place early.

If you are interested in performing and representing the Greek culture through dance, or perhaps you are a Cretan dance performer, then get in touch too. We'd love to hear from you.

Join the fun, join the Figoura family....
