A Dedicated Greek Dance School

Figoura was founded with a clear purpose: to provide structured, high-quality Greek dance education.

Unlike many organisations that teach Greek dance as part of a wider community, cultural, or charitable programme, Figoura is neither a Greek community association (Σύλλογος), a cultural heritage society (Πολιτιστικός Όμιλος), nor a registered charity.

 

Instead, Figoura was established as a dedicated Greek dance school, with teaching, learning, and student development at the heart of everything we do.

 

This distinction allows us to focus on creating a structured curriculum, investing in high-quality instruction, developing clear progression pathways, and providing opportunities for cultural immersion, performance, and international dance certification.

 

Our mission is simple: to make authentic Greek dance accessible to everyone while offering a learning experience that is engaging, educational, and rewarding for dancers of all backgrounds and abilities.

Learn More Than Just the Popular Dances

While many schools focus primarily on the dances commonly seen at weddings, festivals, and social events, Figoura takes a much broader and more structured approach to learning Greek dance.

Our Beginner/General level classes are built around a carefully selected programme of CORE dances. These include well-known favourites such as Kalamatianos, Ikariotiko, Hasaposerviko, Ballos, Tsamiko, Syrtos, and others. These dances have been chosen not only because of their popularity, but because they expose students to many of the key regional styles, rhythms, movement patterns, and dance motifs found throughout the Greek world.

The CORE programme provides students with a strong, holistic foundation and a broad understanding of Greek dance across multiple regions, preparing them for social dancing while also opening the door to deeper exploration.

For students wishing to progress further, our Intermediate/Advanced class takes learning to the next level. Rather than maintaining a broad regional overview, these classes focus on specific regions in greater depth. Students explore regional dance traditions, stylistic nuances, local variations, musical structures, cultural context, and many of the lesser-known dances that are rarely taught outside Greece.

This means that students are not limited to learning only the most recognisable dances. Instead, they gain insight into the remarkable diversity of Greek dance traditions, developing a richer understanding of the customs, history, and regional identities that make Greek dance such a fascinating and rewarding art form.

Our classes are carefully structured to support progression.

Whether you are taking your first steps or developing advanced regional techniques, our curriculum has been designed to build confidence, understanding, and technical ability in a logical and enjoyable way.

Students can progress from Beginner/General  levels through to Intermediate/Advanced classes, gaining exposure to increasingly diverse and complex dances along the way.

 

Expert Instruction

Founder and lead instructor Jack Iacovou has dedicated decades to studying, teaching, performing, and promoting Greek dance.

​

His unique combination of dance expertise, analytical thinking, musical understanding, and clear communication enables students to learn efficiently while enjoying the process. Classes are delivered in a supportive and welcoming environment where dancers of all abilities feel encouraged to succeed.

 

Learn Through Culture, Not Just Classes

At Figoura, learning extends beyond the dance floor.

Each year, students have opportunities to participate in cultural experiences such as our annual trip to Naousa, Greece, where they can immerse themselves in local traditions, witness authentic customs and celebrations, and learn directly within the cultural environment that gave birth to the dances themselves.

These experiences provide a deeper understanding that simply cannot be gained from weekly classes alone.

 

Performance Opportunities

Students who wish to challenge themselves further have opportunities to take part in performances throughout the year.

​

Events such as the Danceworks Showcase and the World Dance Festival allow dancers to develop confidence, stage presence, teamwork, and performance skills while sharing their passion for Greek dance with wider audiences.

​

Participation is always encouraged but never mandatory, allowing students to choose the path that best suits their goals.

 

International Dance Certification

Through our affiliation with the International Dance Council (CID), students may have opportunities to work towards internationally recognised dance certifications.

​

These qualifications recognise commitment, training, and performance experience, providing students with tangible milestones as they progress through their dance journey.
